Quito The Galapagos: Ecuadors Best Features

The Republic of Ecuador is considered to be one of the most scenic and vibrant places to visit in South America. From a beach holiday in the Galapagos Islands to a city holiday exploring the Colonial city of Quito a trip to Ecuador offers an active exciting holiday in one of South America’s most beautiful countries.

Of all the places to visit in Ecuador the Galapagos Islands are among the most famous. The islands are located within the Pacific Ocean and lie around one thousand kilometres from the South African continent. Charles Darwin visited the islands during his voyage of the Beagle and would later write about the wildlife and geological features in his writings on natural selection.

In recent years the islands have grown in popularity particularly with conservationists and nature lovers attracting visitors keen to understand the island that inspired the theory of natural selection. Although tourism has become extremely popular on the island much of the natural beauty remains unspoilt thus ensuring animals such as the giant tortoise marine iguana and penguin can continue to thrive in their natural habitat.

Far away from the tranquil surroundings of the Galapagos Islands lies another of Ecuador’s popular attractions the capital city of San Francisco de Quito. Situated in the heart of the Guayllabamba river basin and on the eastern slopes of Pichincha the city of Quito is home to more than one and a half million people.

Known as the city of eternal spring Quito’s high altitude lends itself to a moderately cool and comfortable climate for most of the year. Although not the largest city in Ecuador Quito is widely considered to be the political and cultural hub of the country thus making it an ideal destination for tourists visiting Ecuador.

History enthusiasts will be particularly interested in the dynamic yet diverse history that surrounds the city of Quito. Prior to 1534 Ecuador was part of the Incan Empire. However between 1534 and 1830 the country was part of the Spanish Empire which has resulted in strong Hispanic customs food and architecture and of course Spanish as the national language.

Visitors to the city will be able to see the Spanish influences throughout Quito particularly in the Old City where many of the traditional buildings from the colonial period have been restored. To the North of the city there is a much more modern feel with restaurants bars and retail parks serving as the main attractions. In recent years this area has grown in popularity with tourists as most flights to Ecuador are served by the city airport situated on the outskirts of this region.

Although Quito and the Galapagos islands provide two contrasting holidays for the visitor looking to gain a complete experience of Ecuador a combination of the two provides a balance of Ecaudor’s best features. Quito provides an insight into the country’s colourful history while the Galapagos provides a look at some of the country’s most beautiful landscapes.
