Loule is a rural administrative and active market town with some remains of a castle dating back to the 12th Century.

The Arab castle has been virtually destroyed leaving some walls still standing that are now surrounded by modern buildings. Like most other towns in the Algarve most of the older potentially interesting buildings have been destroyed in the earthquake that occurred in 1755.

Within the remaining walls is a museum with an explanation of what was in the past the grandeur of the castle. However its Gothic arches and side chapels that are from the 16th Century have survived.

Viking Adventures Are For Grownups Too

If you thought that the days of wonderment and adventure ended years ago with the transition into the adult world then you will be glad to hear that this is certainly not so and I made this heartening discovery whilst on a corporate day out to York. Now York is a wonderful City and it has a score of fantastic attractions; York Minster Cathedral The National Railway Museum and York Shambles to name but a few; so imagine my surprise when I found out that we were having a Corporate evening in Jorvik Viking Centreand that it was my job to make the bookings and arrange accommodation for 20 people!

As it turned out the bookings for Jorvik were easy; I did everything over the phone and it was done within 15 minutes. I next turned my focus to booking a hotels in York for our group. I had an inkling that booking a York hotel for a group of 20 was going to be problematical and pictured a scenario where I would have one group in a hotel in one part of York and the other half of the party in a completely different and far off York hotel. I neednt have worried though thanks to internet booking I managed to find a great hotel close to Jorvik book the entire party in and all within the space of another 15 minutesbrilliant.

So how did the corporate day out to Jorvik go?

Brilliant! We had a choice between an evening viewing of the Viking Centre an opportunity to take part in a real archaeological dig or a chance to take part in a feast with the Vikingsof course; I opted for the feast immediately and what a feast it was. The setting was the Merchant Taylors hall; one of the finest medieval buildings in Jorvik. There we feasted on fare made from traditional ingredients available to the Vikings and served by Viking wenches and were royally entertained by Vikings demonstrating traditional shows of strength shows of agility and of traditional story telling.

Afterwards still in a Viking merrymaking mood we repaired to our hotels in York to carry on the evening in the slightly less Viking but just as welcoming hotel Bar. Our corporate trip was one of the best that anyone could remember; Vikings feasts history great colleagues and a brilliant hotel in Yorkwhat more could anyone want?
